Wiseman
Go only if you are driving the Dalton Highway and want one night off the road: 1 night, no services, everything private.
Wiseman is a small former mining village 3 miles off the Dalton Highway at Mile 188, 13 miles south of Coldfoot and about 260 miles north of Fairbanks (check). There is no fuel, no food, no shop and no airstrip. Two families rent rooms. Everything else in the village is private property, so you visit with a resident or not at all. Treat it as a quiet overnight on a Dalton drive, not a destination.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Everything in the village is private property: get a resident's OK before walking around.
- No fuel, food, groceries or alcohol in Wiseman — carry in everything you need.
- No airstrip and no car rental: without your own vehicle you are hitchhiking the Dalton.
- One family keeps sled dogs and posts "Do Not Approach Dogs" signs: respect them.
- Winter cold here can kill an unprepared walker within minutes; summer brings mosquitoes and bears.
Low crime, high exposure risk. The real dangers are the Dalton Highway itself, winter cold, bears and getting lost off the road; tell someone your plan and carry water, food and a spare tyre.
