Wisconsin Dells
Go for 2–3 nights in June–August if you want water parks; skip the resort strip in winter unless you are here for an indoor park or the casino.
Wisconsin Dells is a small city (about 2,400 residents) on the Wisconsin River, an hour north of Madison, built around two things: the sandstone bluffs of the Upper and Lower Dells, seen by boat, and a dense strip of water and theme parks along Wisconsin Dells Parkway. It is a family destination, not a city break. Two to three nights covers one boat tour, one big water park and one evening downtown; a day trip from Madison is possible but tight.

Get around
A car is the practical choice: the attractions sit along an L-shaped route formed by Broadway and Wisconsin Dells Parkway, and there is no useful local bus network. Amtrak's Empire Builder and Borealis stop at the Wisconsin Dells station on La Crosse Street, a short walk from downtown Broadway, but you still need rides to reach the parks. Taxis and rideshare exist but are thin at closing time.
