Wisła
Give Wisła 2 nights as a mountain base: hike or ski by day, one valley evening. Skip it if you want city sights or no car and no patience for buses.
Wisła is a long, straggly mountain valley 90 km south of Katowice, not a compact town. Poland's largest river starts here, and the resort grew around hill-walking and winter sports in the 19th century. It is mostly Lutheran, unlike most of Poland, and it works all year: lifts and trails in summer, ski slopes in winter. You come for the outdoors, not for a checklist of monuments. Two nights is the useful minimum; three if you add Istebna and Koniaków.
