Wirksworth
Base here 1–2 nights for a quiet Peak District town with a steam railway; day-trip from Matlock or Derby if you only want the Heritage Centre.
Wirksworth is a small Derbyshire market town of about 5,200 people, 4 miles (6.4 km) south of Matlock and 11 miles (18 km) north of Derby. It is walkable in an afternoon, but the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway, the Star Disc and the National Stone Centre give it enough for a full day, and it works as a low-key base for the southern Peak District. Most visitors come for one night or as a day trip.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff

Scams and watch-outs
- Lanes are steep and narrow with no pavement in places; wear shoes with grip and watch for cars.
- Mobile signal is 4G from all UK carriers, patchy on Vodafone; 5G has not reached the area.
- Many small attractions, cafés and pubs keep short or seasonal hours: check before you travel.
- Rural buses are infrequent in the evening and on Sundays: check the last bus back.
A quiet, low-crime town; the real risks are steep wet lanes, uneven pavements and unlit rural roads after dark. Standard UK advice applies: 999 in an emergency, 111 for NHS advice.
