Winterthur is Switzerland's sixth-largest city, 20 minutes by train from Zurich and 15 from Zurich Airport. It is a museum city first: Technorama, the Oskar Reinhart Collection, the photo foundation and Kyburg Castle. The old town is small and walkable, the industrial quarter has been rebuilt into offices, bars and a go-kart track, and most travellers see it as a half-day or full-day add-on to Zurich rather than a base.

Get around

The centre is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes. ZVV buses and S-Bahn trains cover the outer districts and Kyburg; a zone ticket is valid on buses, trams and trains inside the canton. Technorama and Kyburg are reached by bus or train plus a short walk, so check the ZVV timetable before you set out.
