Winkler
Give Winkler one night, two at most: the museums and Bethel Heritage Park fill a half-day, and Morden is 15 minutes west on Highway 3.
Winkler is a small agricultural city of about 13,700 in the Pembina Valley, settled by German-speaking Mennonites from Russia from 1874 and still the economic hub of southern Manitoba. It is a practical stop on a Highway 3 run between Winnipeg and the US border, not a destination on its own: one night covers the museums, the park and a meal, and Morden next door supplies the rest.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- Winter wind chills drop below −30 °C: a block of walking outdoors is a real risk without a proper coat.
- Summer thunderstorms and hail are common on the Prairies; check the forecast before a long drive.
- Many businesses close on Sundays.
- The Pembina Threshermen's Museum is seasonal: mid-May to 30 September only.
Winkler is a low-crime small city and safe to walk in daylight. The real risks are winter cold, deer and trucks on Highway 3 at night, and Sunday closures that leave you without dinner plans.
