Windsor
Windsor, Connecticut
Give Windsor one full day, not a base: the town green, two small museums and the river trail. Sleep in Hartford or Windsor Locks instead.
Windsor is Connecticut's first English settlement, founded in 1633, and today a town of about 29,000 people on the Connecticut River just north of Hartford. Its draw is small and specific: a green with three centuries of houses around it, a vintage radio museum, a river trail, and a rail station on the Hartford Line. Most travellers see it in half a day between Hartford and Bradley airport, or use it as a quiet, cheaper bed near the airport.

Get around
A car is the practical choice: sights sit 2–5 km (1.2–3.1 mi) apart along Route 159 and Day Hill Road, and buses are sparse. The Hartford Line (CTrail and Amtrak) stops at Windsor station, 41 Central Street, with roughly hourly service south to Hartford (about 10 min) and north to Windsor Locks and Springfield; Amtrak's Northeast Regional and Valley Flyer also call here a few times a day. Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Sidewalks are missing on parts of Route 159 and Palisado Avenue; walk facing traffic and use the crosswalks at the green.
- The river trail floods after heavy rain and is closed in places in spring: check before you go.
- Winter ice on the green and paths; the outdoor rink is weather-dependent, roughly late December to mid-March.
- Restaurant kitchens in town close early, often by 20:00–21:00; eat before 20:00 or drive to Hartford.
- Bradley airport traffic backs up on I-91 at weekday rush hour; leave extra time for a flight.
Windsor is a low-crime small town; the real risks are drivers on Route 159 and I-91, unlit road shoulders after dark, and river-trail flooding. Standard US precautions apply.
