Windhoek

Windhoek is a one-night-plus city before a self-drive loop: walk the heritage hill (Christuskirche, Alte Feste, Independence Museum) in the morning, use a taxi for everything else, and be off the streets before dark.

Windhoek is small, orderly and quiet, and its sights sit on one hill and one mall. The trips that go wrong start at the airport: it is about 45 km from town, so a late landing with no transfer arranged ends in an expensive ride or a hotel near the airport. Walking after dark in the centre is the second problem. Four clusters cover a first visit; Sossusvlei, Swakopmund and Etosha are trips away from the loop, not from this bed.

WDH to central Windhoek: one pre-booked shuttle or hotel car, 40–60 minutes on the B6 — the risk is a landing with no transfer arranged: the airport is about 45 km from town and taxis are few late at night.

Language

English is the official language and works everywhere in tourism. Afrikaans is a common lingua franca in the south and centre; Oshiwambo dominates the north; German is spoken in Swakopmund, Lüderitz and by many lodge owners. Damara/Nama is a click language.

  • Lodge directions are often given as GPS points; save them offline.

Etiquette, safety and scams

Etiquette

  • Greeting: Greet and ask 'how are you' before any question; avoid: Straight to business
  • Village visits: Go with a guide and ask permission; avoid: Photographing without asking
  • Roads: Wave at passing drivers on quiet gravel; stop for anyone in trouble; avoid: Speeding through villages
  • Lodges: Follow staff instructions about walking at night; avoid: Leaving your room after dark in unfenced lodges without an escort
  • Language: English or a few words of Afrikaans or Oshiwambo; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks German

Red lines

  • Ask before photographing people, especially at Soweto Market.
  • Do not photograph police, soldiers or the parliament grounds beyond the public paths.

  • Fake e-visa sites: Only eservices.mhaiss.gov.na; others add large fees.
  • Parking 'car guards' and window-washers: Park in guarded lots; tip official guards N$5–10.
  • Street souvenir sellers carving your name: Say no before they start; carved nuts are then 'sold' at high prices.
  • Distraction thefts at ATMs: Use ATMs inside banks and malls.
  • Unofficial Himba village tours: Go with a community-run or recommended guide; avoid 'show villages'.
