Wilno
Stop for 2–3 hours off Highway 60: church, museum, tavern lunch. Sleep in Barry's Bay 15 min west; Wilno has one motel.
Wilno is the oldest Polish settlement in Canada, a hamlet of a few hundred people on Highway 60 in the Madawaska Valley, about 2 hours west of Ottawa. There is no public transport and almost nothing to do after dark. It works as a half-day stop on an Ottawa Valley drive, not as a base.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- No public transport and no taxi rank: arrive with a car or a booked ride.
- Most businesses close outside summer; the museum and gallery run seasonal hours only.
- Cell coverage is patchy on Highway 60 between towns.
- Winter driving on Highway 60: snow tires and daylight travel advised.
Very safe. The real risks are wildlife on Highway 60 at dusk, winter road conditions, and arriving without a car or a bed: there is no public transport and one motel.
