Williamsburg
Williamsburg, Virginia
Give it 2 nights: one full day for Colonial Williamsburg, one for Jamestown or Yorktown. Add a third only for Busch Gardens or a theme-park day.
Williamsburg is a small Virginia city built around one big thing: the restored 18th-century capital district, Colonial Williamsburg, plus the two National Park Service sites at Jamestown and Yorktown on the Colonial Parkway. It is a driving town with limited buses, so a car or rideshare changes what you can do. Two nights covers the history; families add a day for the parks.

Get around
Most visitors drive. WATA buses link the transportation center, the visitor center and parts of town, and the Yellow line runs to Busch Gardens and Water Country USA in season. Parking in the restored area is limited and often capped at two hours; use the paid Colonial Williamsburg lots. At Confusion Corner (Richmond Rd, Boundary St, Jamestown Rd, Duke of Gloucester St) traffic heading west on Jamestown Rd and east on Richmond Rd toward Boundary St has right of way; everyone else yields, and pedestrians cross constantly.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Confusion Corner: right-of-way rules are unusual and pedestrians are everywhere.
- Many restaurants and shops in the historic area close around 20:00–21:00.
- Colonial Williamsburg ticket prices change by season and length of stay; buy on the official site.
- Signs near Jamestown and Yorktown point to the private living-history museums, not the NPS sites; check which one you want.
- Summer heat and humidity are real; plan indoor or shaded stops midday.
Williamsburg is a low-crime small city; the practical risks are driving at Confusion Corner, summer heat, and unlit stretches of the Colonial Parkway after dark.
