Willemstad

Willemstad is a two-day harbour town: do Punda and Otrobanda on foot before 11:00 and after 16:00, spend the hot middle of the day at a beach or indoors, and rent a car for anything outside town.

Willemstad's old town is small and flat: two shores joined by a floating bridge, both walkable in a morning. The trips that go wrong walk the harbour at noon in full sun, plan around a bridge that swings open for ships, or try to reach the west-end beaches without a car. Four clusters cover a first visit: Punda and Otrobanda for the sights, Pietermaai for bars and dinner, and Scharloo for the quiet old houses.

CUR to Willemstad: one taxi on a fixed zone fare or a hotel-booked car, 15–35 minutes for about 12 km — the risk is not the ride but a late flight and a hotel with no night desk.

Walk inside Punda and Otrobanda; taxi between neighbourhoods; rent a car for the rest of the island.

Quieter nights on the west shore, close to the fort and the museum, and a bridge walk from Punda; check the bridge before you plan a fixed time.
Pietermaai
First-timers: restored townhouse hotels with a 24-hour desk, restaurants on the doorstep and a 10-minute walk to Punda; a taxi drops at the door.

Language

Papiamentu is the everyday language; Dutch runs government and schools; English is official and widely used in tourism; Spanish is common because Venezuela is 65 km away.

  • 'Bon dia' (good morning), 'bon tardi' (afternoon), 'bon nochi' (evening), 'danki' (thank you), 'kon ta bai?' (how are you?).
  • Curaçao spells it Papiamentu with phonetic spelling (k, u); Aruba spells it Papiamento.

  • Dress: Cover up in Punda and restaurants; avoid: Swimwear off the beach
  • Beaches: Pay the entry where charged and use the bins; avoid: Bringing coolers where they are banned
  • Diving: Buoyancy control off the reef; avoid: Kicking up sand or touching coral

  • Cover up away from the beach: swimwear is not for town or restaurants.
  • Ask before photographing people at the floating market.
  • Stay off the rough north coast for swimming.
