Wijlre

Wijlre is a small village in the Geul valley, part of the Gulpen-Wittem municipality, built around the Brand brewery that has brewed here since 1365. There is no rail link to the Dutch network and only a handful of sights, so it works as a base for hikers and cyclists, not as a sightseeing town. Most travellers see it in half a day and sleep in Gulpen, Valkenburg or Maastricht.

Get around
The village is walkable end to end in about 15 minutes. Buses 40 (Heerlen–Gulpen) and 49 (Gulpen–Valkenburg) stop at Wijlre Brouwerij and Wijlre Wielderdorpstraat. Bikes and cars are the practical way to reach the hamlets and the Geul valley; rent bikes in Gulpen or Valkenburg.
