Wiener Neustadt is a rail junction and industrial town 50 km south of Vienna, rebuilt after heavy World War II damage, so the historic fabric is patchy. It works as a cheap, quiet base for the Hohe Wand, the Semmering line and southern Lower Austria, not as a sightseeing destination in its own right. Most travellers pass through on the S-Bahn or stop one night.
