White River Junction
White River Junction, Vermont
Give it one night, two at most: a rail-and-road junction with a cartoon school, a theatre and Quechee Gorge 15 min away. Base here only if you have a car.
White River Junction is a small village in the town of Hartford, Vermont, sitting where Interstate 89 meets Interstate 91 and where Amtrak's Vermonter stops on its daily run between St. Albans and Washington, DC. Downtown is a few blocks of 19th-century brick around the station; the draw is the Center for Cartoon Studies, Northern Stage theatre and Quechee Gorge, plus easy access to Hanover, New Hampshire and Dartmouth College. Most travellers pass through by train or use it as a one-night stop between Boston or New York and northern Vermont. Without a car you are limited to the village and the free Advance Transit buses; with a car the Upper Valley opens up.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Winter driving: ice and snow on I-89 and I-91; carry a scraper and check road conditions.
- Rural cell coverage drops on back roads in Vermont and New Hampshire.
- Many restaurants close one or two days a week and kitchens stop early — check hours before you walk over.
- Amtrak's Vermonter runs once daily each way; miss it and the next option is a bus or a long drive.
- Black flies and mosquitoes in May–June near the river.
No overall safety rating here: the practical cautions are winter driving on I-89 and I-91, ice on pavements, and long gaps between services after dark — carry a light and know your last bus or train. In an emergency call 911.
