White Mountain
Skip unless you are a dedicated Iditarod fan or have a specific reason to visit a remote inland Seward Peninsula village: one night is enough, and only if you fly in from Nome.
White Mountain is a tiny gold-rush village on the Fish River, 60 miles east of Nome. It is the only inland Bering Strait settlement and sits on the Iditarod Trail. The village has a small airstrip, a damp alcohol law (bring your own), and limited services. Most travellers use it as a day-trip or overnight from Nome, or as a checkpoint during the Iditarod race.

Etiquette, safety and scams

- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Alcohol is damp: you cannot buy it in town, but you may bring your own for personal use.
- Flights are weather-dependent; have a flexible schedule.
- Services are minimal: no bank, limited groceries at ANICA Native Store.
