White Cliffs
Go for one night if you are already on the Barrier Highway: underground sleep, opal diggings and a 93 km sealed road from Wilcannia. Skip if you want shops or a pool of things to do.
White Cliffs is an opal-mining town of about 100 people in the Far West of New South Wales, reached by a good sealed road from Wilcannia or a dirt road from Broken Hill. The reason to come is the underground stay and the diggings; the town itself is small, so one night covers it and two nights suits fossickers.

Scams and watch-outs
- Animals on the Wilcannia road, especially at dawn and dusk.
- The Broken Hill route via Mutawintji is unsealed: check conditions and do not attempt after rain.
- Summer heat is dangerous; carry water and tell someone your plan.
- Phone coverage is patchy outside town.
- Fossicking is only allowed in set-aside areas; ask locally before digging.
Remote and hot: the main risks are heat, animals on the road and no phone signal. Carry water, fuel up before you leave, and tell someone your route.
