Whangaroa
Give Whangaroa one night if you fish or want a quiet harbour; otherwise pass through in 2–3 hours on the Twin Coast Discovery Highway.
Whangaroa is a small harbour settlement in the Far Far North, about 40 minutes north of the Bay of Islands and 20 minutes south of Doubtless Bay. It was a kauri-logging and shipbuilding centre from the 1850s to 1909, when local yards launched over 100 vessels. Today it is a game-fishing base with bush walks and white-sand bays nearby. Most travellers see it as a stop on the Twin Coast Discovery Highway rather than a destination in itself.

You need a car. There is no useful public transport around the harbour, and the bays, walks and boat ramps are spread along SH10 and side roads. Drive on the left; expect one-lane bridges and gravel on the smaller roads. Fuel up in Kaeo or Kerikeri before heading to the outer bays.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Kia ora or a handshake; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; overlong small talk before business
- Marae visit: Wait to be called on, follow your guide through the pōwhiri, remove shoes before the meeting house; avoid: Eating or drinking inside the wharenui; walking in front of speakers
- Tables and heads: Keep bottoms off tables and hats off tables; food stays away from heads; avoid: Sitting on tables or kitchen benches; touching people's heads
- Roads: Pull over at slow-vehicle bays to let queues pass; wave thanks; avoid: Stopping on the road for photos; drifting right after a stop
- Outdoors: Carry out all rubbish; use toilets; stick to tracks; avoid: Feeding kea and other birds; toileting outside
- Talk: Self-deprecating humour and understatement; avoid: Calling New Zealanders Australians; boasting
- Home visit: Bring wine or something to share; shoes off if the hosts do; avoid: Arriving empty-handed to a 'bring a plate' event
- Names: Use Māori place names and pronounce them with care; avoid: Joking about Māori words or haka
Scams and watch-outs
- No public transport around the harbour: without a car you are limited to the village.
- Cell coverage is patchy on the outer bays and bush tracks; download offline maps.
- Boat ramps and rocks are slippery; swell and currents at the open beaches can be strong.
- Many cafés and lodges run seasonal hours or close on odd days: check before you drive out.
- Fuel and groceries are limited locally; the nearest full supermarket is in Kerikeri or Kaitaia.
Whangaroa is a quiet, low-crime rural area; the real risks are the roads, the water and the lack of services. Tell someone your plan before a bush walk, and swim between the flags where they exist.
