Westport is a 700-person village at the west end of Upper Rideau Lake and the head of navigation for the Rideau Canal. There is no bus or train, so you arrive by car or by boat. Most travellers use it as a quiet one-night stop between Kingston, Perth and Ottawa, or as a base for Foley Mountain and the lakes.

Get around
Walk the village: Bedford, Church and Concession streets hold the shops, restaurants and harbour, all within about 10 minutes on foot. For Foley Mountain, the golf courses and the lakes you need a car. Boats and kayaks can dock at Westport Harbour marina and you walk into the village from there.

Scams and watch-outs
- No scheduled bus or rail service: without a car you are dependent on taxis or a tour.
- The Kingston road (Perth Road, 401 exit 617) is a winding two-lane rural road; the 50 km takes close to an hour, and deer are common at dusk.
- Many businesses are seasonal: winery tastings run Saturdays Jun–Sep, and some restaurants and lodges close outside summer.
- Cell coverage is patchy on the back roads around Bob's Lake and Wolfe Lake.
Very safe for a village of this size; the real risks are rural driving at dusk (deer), cold water on the lakes, and seasonal closures that leave you without a meal or a bed if you arrive unbooked.
