Westlock
Give Westlock half a day, not a night, unless you want the tractor museum or a ski hill: it is a service town 1 h north of Edmonton.
Westlock is a farm-service town of about 5,000 on the aspen parkland belt north of Edmonton, on the Highway 18/44 route toward Slave Lake and Peace River. Two small museums, a golf course, a ski hill and a skydive operation are the draw; most travellers pass through in an hour or use it as a cheap bed before heading north.

Get around
You need a car. The town is small enough to walk end to end in about 20 minutes, but the tractor museum, golf course and ski hill sit outside the centre. Two local taxi firms cover the town and the airport.

- Nothing is open late: most kitchens stop by 21:00–22:00 and the town shuts down early.
- Fuel up in Westlock before heading north on Highway 44; the next services are far apart.
A quiet, low-crime farm town; the real risks are winter roads, wildlife on the highway at dusk and long gaps between services.
