Westerly
Westerly, Rhode Island
Go for 2 nights in summer for the beach and Watch Hill; 1 night off-season for downtown and the Granite Theatre. A car is near-mandatory.
Westerly is the beach town at Rhode Island's southwest corner, on the Pawcatuck River across from Pawcatuck, Connecticut. Its draw is a 7-mile stretch of sand from Watch Hill to Weekapaug, a walkable Victorian downtown around Wilcox Park, and a summer population that roughly doubles. Most visitors come for the beach between late June and early September; off-season it is a quiet base for the South County coast.

Get around
A car is the simplest way to cover Westerly: downtown parking is free, beach lots run about $10–30 a day in season (check). Amtrak stops at Westerly station on Railroad Avenue, and RIPTA Flex is a reservation-based bus for suburban trips — book about 48 hours ahead by phone. In summer, walking and cycling work along Atlantic Avenue; distances between downtown, Misquamicut and Watch Hill are too long to do on foot.

- Misquamicut / Atlantic Avenue
- Motels and rentals steps from the state beach; the summer default, but you need a car for everything else.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Beach parking is limited on summer weekends; arrive early or use a private lot (check).
- State law bans walking on the dunes at any time — they are fragile and protected.
- Water stays cold into late June; rip currents and 10–20 ft storm waves are real during hurricanes and nor'easters.
- Many beach businesses and rentals are seasonal; off-season hours are limited — check before you drive.
- Leave dogs away from Napatree Point in spring and summer because of nesting ospreys.
Westerly is a small beach town; the real risks are rip currents, cold water, sun exposure and summer beach traffic. Keep valuables out of sight in beach lots and watch for cyclists on Atlantic Avenue.
