Westcliffe
A half-day stop on a South Central Colorado road trip: see the Sangre de Cristo range, eat a pie, then move on. One night only if you want dark skies.
Westcliffe is a tiny county-seat town (pop. 568) at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, 2 h 15 min from Colorado Springs. There is no fast food, no chain hotel, and no single must-see attraction — the draw is the wide-open valley, the mountain light, and a few good cafes. Most travellers use it as a lunch-and-stretch stop on the way to the San Luis Valley or Great Sand Dunes.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Cell service can be patchy in the valley; download maps offline.
- Winter snow can close CO-96 over Hardscrabble Pass; check conditions.
- No gas station after 20:00 in town — fill up in Cañon City or Pueblo.
- Altitude is about 2,400 m (7,900 ft); take it easy the first day.
Very safe. The main risks are altitude sickness, wildlife on the road at dusk, and sudden mountain weather — carry water, layers, and a full tank of gas.
