West Wyalong
Stop one night on the Newell Highway, or skip: two hours covers the museum, the poppet head and a pub meal.
West Wyalong is the administrative centre of Bland Shire and the biggest cereal-growing district in central New South Wales, which is why the Newell Highway runs through it and truck drivers use it as a break. There is a small gold-rush history, a local museum and a replica mine poppet head, but no beach, no wine trail and no reason to build a holiday around it. Treat it as a clean bed and a hot meal between Dubbo, Wagga and Melbourne.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Long, straight highway stretches with kangaroos and emus at dawn and dusk: avoid driving then if you can.
- Summer days regularly pass 40 °C; carry water and check the fire danger rating before any detour.
- Mobile coverage drops on the back roads between towns; download offline maps.
- Motels fill on weeknights with highway and harvest traffic: book before you arrive.
A quiet country town and safe to walk at night. The real risks are the highway (kangaroos, road trains, fatigue) and summer heat: drive in daylight, carry water, and check the fire danger rating.
