West Vancouver
Base here only if you have a car or want Horseshoe Bay ferries: 1 night, or a half-day for Lighthouse Park and the seawall.
West Vancouver is a residential municipality on the North Shore, across the Lions Gate Bridge from downtown Vancouver. It has no hotel district and almost no nightlife, but it holds the area's best coastal trails (Lighthouse Park, Whytecliff), the Ambleside-to-Dundarave seawall, Cypress Mountain, and the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal for Bowen Island, Nanaimo and the Sunshine Coast. Most visitors see it as a half-day or a ferry transfer, not a base.

Get around
TransLink buses run the Marine Drive spine: the R2 rapid bus links Park Royal with North Vancouver, and routes 250 and 257 run from downtown Vancouver to Horseshoe Bay via Park Royal. Pay with a Compass Card, a Compass Ticket or contactless credit card; transfers last 90 minutes. A car makes the parks and Cypress Mountain far easier — Lighthouse Park and Whytecliff have no useful bus stop at the trailhead.

Sleep
- Horseshoe Bay
- The only practical base: motel rooms a few minutes from the ferry berths, for early sailings to Nanaimo, Bowen Island or the Sunshine Coast.
- Ambleside and Park Royal
- Mall, groceries and the seawall within walking distance; hotel supply is thin, so most people sleep in downtown Vancouver and day-trip.
- Dundarave
- Village strip at the foot of 25th St with the pier and a small beach; quiet in the evening.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- Sidewalks are patchy outside the Ambleside–Dundarave strip; walking between neighbourhoods often means a shoulder on Marine Drive.
- Lighthouse Park trails cross wet boulders and roots: wear shoes with grip and keep to marked paths.
- Dogs must be leashed in Lighthouse Park between May and September for seasonal wildlife.
- BC Ferries sailings from Horseshoe Bay fill at peak times; drivers should reserve and redeem at least 30 minutes before departure or lose the guarantee.
- Parking at Horseshoe Bay and the popular trailheads is limited on summer weekends.
Very safe by Canadian city standards; the real risks are wet, slippery coastal trails, rain gear you did not pack, and limited late-night transport back from downtown Vancouver.
