West Estonia is a mainland coast plus a scatter of islands. Pärnu and Haapsalu are easy bus or train rides from Tallinn and work as sleep bases; Saaremaa and Hiiumaa need a ferry and at least two nights to be worth the crossing. Inter-island and Haapsalu–Pärnu buses are sparse, so most travellers return through the mainland rather than island-hop.
