Wengen
Base here 2–3 nights if you want car-free village quiet and Jungfrau access by train; skip if you want nightlife or a cheap bed.
Wengen is a car-free Alpine village at 1,274 m on a ledge above the Lauterbrunnen valley, reached only by cog railway from Lauterbrunnen (13 min). It is a summer hiking base and a winter ski base, with the Männlichen cable car in the centre and the Wengernalpbahn running up to Kleine Scheidegg and the Jungfraujoch line. There are no hostels and no campsites: beds are hotel rooms and serviced apartments, and prices are high. Two or three nights covers the village, Männlichen and one big mountain day; one night is enough if you are only passing through to Jungfraujoch.

Get around
Wengen is small enough to walk: the station, shops and cable car are within about 10 minutes of each other. Private cars are not allowed in the village; visitors park at Lauterbrunnen or Interlaken and ride up. The Männlichen cable car leaves from the centre with large gondolas every 10 minutes or so. The Wengernalpbahn train runs up to Allmend, Wengernalp, Kleine Scheidegg and Eigergletscher, and down to Lauterbrunnen. Some hotels run electric buggies for luggage.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; three cheek kisses among friends; avoid: Skipping the greeting in shops
- Punctuality: Be exactly on time; avoid: Running for the train expecting it to wait
- Language: Greet in the local language, then ask for English; avoid: Speaking German in Geneva as a default
- Quiet: Low voices in trains; quiet carriages are marked; avoid: Speakerphone calls
- Money: Keep financial talk discreet; avoid: Asking people's salaries
- Recycling: Separate PET, glass and cans; avoid: Leaving rubbish in hotel or flat bins unsorted
Scams and watch-outs
- No cars: park at Lauterbrunnen or Interlaken and take the train up; service vehicles still use the village lanes.
- Between seasons (roughly Nov and late Apr to mid-May) many hotels and restaurants shut or serve dinner only: check before booking.
- Jungfraujoch trains sell out on clear days in high season: book a timed seat ahead or you may not get up.
- Mobile coverage is patchy on the slopes above the village; download maps before you hike.
- Trails and ski runs cross the railway and cable-car lines: obey the barriers and crossing signs.
Wengen is a low-crime, family-oriented resort and the main risks are mountain ones: weather that turns fast above the tree line, snow and ice on trails, and altitude at Kleine Scheidegg and Jungfraujoch. Tell your hotel your route, check the last train or cable car, and carry a charged phone.
