Wenchi
Half a day to a full day: the Apoo Festival if you time it right, otherwise a quiet market town with a couple of hotels — not a destination on its own.
Wenchi is the capital of the Wenchi Municipal district in the Bono Region, about 30 km north of Techiman on the main road to the Upper East. It's a small agricultural town (about 39,000 people in 2013) with one notable event — the Apoo Festival in March–April — and a handful of hotels. Most travellers pass through on the way to Sunyani or the north; a stop of a few hours is enough unless the festival is on.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake with the right hand, ask after health and family; avoid: Starting with a question
- Elders: Stand when an elder enters and let them speak first; avoid: Crossed legs in front of chiefs
- Hands: Right hand for everything; avoid: Passing money with the left
- Dress: Smart clothes for churches, offices and palaces; avoid: Beachwear in town
- Photos: Ask first; offer to show the picture; avoid: Photographing police, soldiers or funerals without permission
- Funerals: Weekend funerals are public events; guests wear black, red or white as the family specifies; avoid: Treating them as a sight
Scams and watch-outs
- Apoo Festival dates vary each year: confirm with the local tourism office or a hotel before booking.
- Roads can be rough in the rainy season; plan extra travel time.
- ATMs are limited; bring enough cash from Techiman or Sunyani.
Wenchi is generally safe, but keep valuables out of sight and avoid walking alone after dark. The main risk is road safety: tro-tros are crowded and roads are unlit.
