Welshpool is a small Mid Wales market town on the Shrewsbury–Aberystwyth rail line, useful as a stop rather than a base. Its one big draw is Powis Castle, a National Trust fortress-and-garden estate a short way out of town. Add the narrow-gauge steam railway, the Montgomery Canal wharf and a stretch of the Offa's Dyke Path, and a day plus a night covers it. Most travellers reach it by train from Shrewsbury (about 40 min) or by car on the A483/A458.
