Wellsford
Skip Wellsford as a destination: it is a fuel-and-sandwich stop on SH1 between Auckland and Whangarei. If you need a break, 20 minutes is enough.
Wellsford is a small dairy-farming town of about 2,000 people, 114 km north of Auckland on State Highway 1. It has one museum, a regional park and nearby lakes and beaches, but no reason to stay overnight unless you are camping at Atiu Creek or visiting family. Most travellers pass through in under an hour.

- Marae visit: Wait to be called on, follow your guide through the pōwhiri, remove shoes before the meeting house; avoid: Eating or drinking inside the wharenui; walking in front of speakers
- Tables and heads: Keep bottoms off tables and hats off tables; food stays away from heads; avoid: Sitting on tables or kitchen benches; touching people's heads
- Roads: Pull over at slow-vehicle bays to let queues pass; wave thanks; avoid: Stopping on the road for photos; drifting right after a stop
- Outdoors: Carry out all rubbish; use toilets; stick to tracks; avoid: Feeding kea and other birds; toileting outside
- Talk: Self-deprecating humour and understatement; avoid: Calling New Zealanders Australians; boasting
- Home visit: Bring wine or something to share; shoes off if the hosts do; avoid: Arriving empty-handed to a 'bring a plate' event
- Names: Use Māori place names and pronounce them with care; avoid: Joking about Māori words or haka
Scams and watch-outs
- SH1 holiday traffic can back up through town; use SH16 via Kaipara Harbour as an alternative.
- Atiu Creek gates close at 7–9 PM depending on season; do not get locked in.
- Lake Tomarata has no lifeguards; swim at your own risk.
Very low crime. The main risk is traffic on SH1: do not stop suddenly, and watch for trucks. At the beaches, swim between the flags if lifeguards are present.
