Weißenkirchen in der Wachau

Weißenkirchen is a wine village on the north bank of the Danube, midway between Spitz and Dürnstein, named for the fortified white church above the square. It is small: the centre is walkable in minutes, the draw is Grüner Veltliner and Riesling from family cellars, the river terrace, and the flat riverside cycle path. Trains are few, boats run twice daily in season, and most visitors arrive by bike or car on the B3.

Get around
The centre is compact and walkable; vineyards and St. Michael need a bike or a car. Nextbike stations in the Wachau rent by the hour or day, and the Donauradweg runs flat along the river. Regional trains stop at Weißenkirchen station a few minutes' walk above the village, but only a handful of times a day. Brandner boats link Melk, Emmersdorf, Weißenkirchen, Dürnstein and Krems twice daily in season; bikes go on board for a small fee.

- The B3 has no proper footpath in places: walk facing traffic or use the riverside path.
- Heuriger hours are seasonal and irregular; the tourist office keeps the current schedule.
Very safe. The real risks are the B3 road with no footpath in stretches, fast e-bikes on the shared cycle path, and drinking on an empty stomach at a Heuriger before cycling back.
