Webster is a town of about 16,800 on the Connecticut line, built by Samuel Slater in 1832 around textile mills and now centred on Lake Chaubunagungamaug, the 1,442-acre spring-fed lake that stretches along its southern and eastern edge. It is a car town on I-395, 25 minutes from Worcester Regional Airport, with a walkable downtown strip of restaurants and a lakefront of beaches, marinas and a summer concert venue. Most travellers pass through on the way to Sturbridge or Worcester; the ones who stop come for the water.
