Waterloo, Ontario
Waterloo
Give Waterloo one full day plus a night: universities and Uptown on foot, then St. Jacobs or Kitchener by ION light rail. Two nights if you add Oktoberfest or the farmers' market.
Waterloo is a small, suburban university city of about 121,000, joined at the edge to Kitchener as "K-W". It is not a sight-heavy destination: the draw is the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier campuses, a compact Uptown strip, and the Mennonite farm country just north at St. Jacobs. Most visitors see it in a day or two, usually as a stop between Toronto and Stratford, or as a base for the Region of Waterloo.

Get around
The ION light rail (route 301) runs north–south through Waterloo to Kitchener and is the easiest way to move between Uptown, both universities and Conestoga Mall. Grand River Transit buses cover the rest; route 7 King follows King Street and route 12 Westmount runs along University Ave. Uptown and the two campuses are walkable from each other. Taxis and Uber are available; driving is quick outside rush hour but the street pattern is irregular, not a grid.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- Winter is genuinely cold: Jan–Feb highs near −2 °C with snow and ice on pavements.
- Uptown is small and quiet on weekday evenings outside term time; check whether university is in session.
- Oktoberfest events sell out and prices rise: book accommodation weeks ahead for the first week of October.
- Toronto Pearson to Waterloo can take well over an hour in weekday rush hour; allow extra time for flights.
A safe, low-crime university city; the real issues are winter ice on pavements, quiet streets after dark outside Uptown, and deer or cyclists on rural roads if you drive north.
