Waterford is Ireland's oldest city, settled by Vikings in 914, and its compact centre packs a cathedral, a tower, a medieval museum and Georgian streets into a 15-minute walk. Most travellers see it as a stop on the Dublin–Cork or Rosslare route. One night covers the city; add a second for the Greenway or the coast.

Get around
Walk: the centre is compact and a car is a liability. City buses W1–W5 loop from the Quays near the Clock Tower every 20–30 min. Taxis are metered and nationally regulated. The train station (Plunkett) is just north of the river bridge.

English is everyone's working language, with Irish (Gaeilge) on every sign and spoken daily in the Gaeltacht. You never need Irish, but a few words are welcome and the Hiberno-English idioms are part of the experience.

- 'Garda' police, 'Taoiseach' prime minister, 'Leithreas' toilet; 'Fir' men and 'Mná' women on toilet doors.

Scams and watch-outs
- Waterford Airport has had no scheduled flights since 2016: do not book around it.
- The N25 western bypass has a toll bridge (cars about €2.30).
- Some museums close earlier in winter (Nov–Feb): check before you go.
- The Little Island ferry is for hotel guests and golf clients only, not the public.
Waterford is a low-risk city; the real issues are rain, uneven medieval steps and late-night drinkers around the Quays. Keep to lit streets after midnight and mind the river edge.
