Washington airport to city centre: trains, buses, taxis and costs

Washington Township and the surrounding Morris County towns sit on the western side of the New York metro area. The airport you will almost certainly use is Newark Liberty International (EWR), roughly 65 km east. From there you have three realistic choices: NJ Transit rail with a short taxi at the end, a direct taxi or ride-hail, or a rental car picked up at the airport.

Rail is cheapest and avoids traffic, but it does not drop you in Washington: you ride to a Morris County station such as Morristown, Madison or Dover and finish by taxi or local bus. A direct car costs several times more but runs door to door, which matters with bags, children or a flight landing after the last train.

At EWR, the AirTrain people mover connects the terminals to the Newark Airport rail station, where NJ Transit and Amtrak trains stop. Buy an NJ Transit ticket to your Morris County destination; the AirTrain is included in the rail fare when you start or end at the airport station.

There is no single train that puts you in Washington. The usual pattern is a train toward Dover or Hackettstown on the Morris & Essex line, changing at Newark Broad Street or Summit, then a taxi or ride-hail from Morristown, Madison or Dover. Amtrak also stops at Newark Airport but is aimed at longer trips and rarely helps here.

Trains run through the day but thin out in the evening, and weekend frequencies are lower. Check the last departure that still connects to your station before you commit to a late flight.

A taxi or ride-hail from EWR to Washington Township runs 60–90 minutes depending on traffic and typically costs US$90–150, more at surge times. Pickup zones at the terminals are signposted; follow the app instructions rather than accepting an unsolicited offer inside the terminal.

Driving yourself is straightforward: I-78 west, then I-287 north, or Route 24 depending on your exact address. Tolls apply on some crossings and roads, and most rental rates exclude insurance, fuel and tolls. If your trip continues to other parts of New Jersey or the Northeast, a car is usually the better value than repeated transfers.

For a solo traveller or a couple arriving in daylight, rail plus a short taxi is the cheapest sensible route and usually the fastest when the highways are congested. For three or more people, or anyone landing late, a direct car is often cheaper per person once you count the taxi at the far end.

Budget separately for the return: the same fares apply, and you should add buffer time because Morris County stations are small and trains are infrequent at off-peak hours.

Morris County is car country. Once you are in Washington, buses and trains cover the main corridors but not every street, so plan on a rental car or ride-hailing for daily movement. If you are here for a few days, compare a rental against repeated ride-hail trips before deciding.

Tipping is expected on taxi and ride-hail fares, normally 15–20% added in the app. Tap water is drinkable. Plugs are type A and B at 120 V, so chargers from Europe or Australia need an adapter.
