Washington airport to city centre: trains, buses, taxis and costs

Washington sits between Newcastle and Sunderland in Tyne and Wear. It has no airport and no railway station, so every trip from an airport involves a bus, Metro or taxi at some point. The table below compares the realistic choices from the three airports travellers most often use.

Newcastle International Airport is the default gateway. The Tyne and Wear Metro runs from the airport into Newcastle city centre in about 25 minutes. From there you change to a Metro service toward Sunderland and get off at a station near Washington, or take a local bus. Total journey time is usually 60–75 minutes and the fare is a few pounds.

A taxi from the airport rank or a pre-booked car takes 25–30 minutes depending on traffic on the A1 and A194(M). Expect around £35–45 (2026 estimate). For two or more travellers with bags, this is often the simplest option.

Some local bus services also link the airport area and Washington, but routes and frequencies change; check with the operator before relying on them.

Teesside International Airport, south of Darlington, is about 50 km from Washington. There is no direct rail link from the airport itself; you usually take a bus or taxi to Darlington station, then a train north toward Newcastle or Sunderland, then a local bus or taxi to Washington. Allow 60–90 minutes and £25–60 depending on the mix.

Edinburgh Airport is a long way north, about 190 km. Take the tram or bus to Edinburgh Waverley, then an LNER or CrossCountry train to Newcastle (about 1 h 30), then Metro or bus onward. Total door-to-door is 2 h 30–3 h and £30–60. This only makes sense if you are already in Scotland or found a much cheaper flight.

Metro and bus fares in Tyne and Wear are among the cheapest in the UK. A single Metro journey is a few pounds, and day tickets cover multiple trips. Taxis are the main cost: £35–45 from Newcastle Airport to Washington is typical, more at night or on public holidays.

If you are arriving late or with a lot of luggage, a pre-booked taxi is usually better value than a rank taxi and avoids any queue. Compare quotes before you fly.

Contactless bank cards work on the Metro and most local buses, so you do not need a separate ticket app. Keep a small amount of cash for older taxis or rural buses.

Washington is split across several areas; give your driver or bus route the full address or postcode, not just 'Washington'. The town centre, the Galleries area and the A1 junctions are not the same place.
