Brookland-Petworth-Takoma, Washington, D.C.: neighborhood guide

Brookland, Petworth and Takoma sit east of Rock Creek Park, north of the centre. They grew as streetcar suburbs, then lost population and investment after desegregation and the 1968 riots, and stayed poorer and more African-American than the Upper Northwest across the park. That history is why they feel like ordinary D.C. rather than a sightseeing district — and why travellers rarely come here except for the National Shrine.

Brookland clusters around Catholic University, nicknamed the Little Vatican for its Catholic institutions. Petworth is a grid of rowhouses north of Columbia Heights, with the Armed Forces Retirement Home and President Lincoln's Cottage on its edge. Takoma, on the Maryland line, has a small commercial centre of independent shops and restaurants and a long progressive reputation.

Expect rowhouses, front gardens, churches, and a low-rise, unhurried feel. Sights are spread out: the National Shrine and the Franciscan Monastery are a walk apart in Brookland, while Petworth and Takoma are separate Metro stops. Plan on Metro or bus hops between them rather than one continuous stroll.

Food here is neighbourhood food, not destination dining. Brookland's 12th Street NE strip near the Brookland-CUA station has the densest cluster: coffee shops, bakeries, pizza, Ethiopian and American kitchens, plus student-priced places around Catholic University. Petworth's Upshur Street and Georgia Avenue run to gastropubs, barbecue, Thai and Latin American cooking. Takoma's Carroll Street keeps a small-town feel with cafes, a co-op and casual ethnic restaurants.

Reserve on weekend evenings at the better-known Petworth and Brookland spots; walk-ins are easier on weeknights. Many kitchens close earlier than Downtown, so eat before 9pm unless you have checked hours. For a wider choice, Columbia Heights and Shaw are one or two stops away.

The Red Line serves Takoma, Brookland-CUA and Fort Totten; the Green Line serves Georgia Ave-Petworth and Fort Totten, where the two lines meet. From Downtown or Metro Center, allow roughly 20–30 minutes to Brookland-CUA or Georgia Ave-Petworth including the walk to your address (check). Fares are distance-based and paid with a SmarTrip card or a phone wallet; the same card covers Metrobus.

Metrobus covers the gaps between the three strips, and rideshare pickups are quick outside rush hour. A car is convenient for the National Shrine, the Franciscan Monastery and Lincoln's Cottage, and for leaving the city towards the Beltway, but Georgia Avenue and US-50/New York Avenue are slow at peak times. Street parking exists but is zoned and restricted; read the signs before leaving the car.

Distances are short but not always walkable: Brookland to Petworth is a 25–35 minute walk or a short bus or rideshare, and Takoma is further still. Use the Metro for cross-neighbourhood hops.
