Warwick, Queensland
Warwick
Give Warwick one night as a stopover on the Brisbane–Goondiwindi run, or a half-day if you are already in the Darling Downs; two nights only if you want the steam railway and the museums without rushing.
Warwick is a Darling Downs country town of about 12,000 people at the junction of the Cunningham and New England highways, roughly 1.5 hours' drive from Brisbane. It works as a break in a long drive and as a base for the Southern Downs and Granite Belt: a compact centre of sandstone buildings, a heritage steam railway, a small gallery and a handful of pubs. Most travellers pass through in an afternoon; one night is enough to see it properly.

The centre is flat and walkable: Palmerin Street to the railway station is about 10 minutes on foot. A car is useful for the museums on Dragon Street, the steam railway and the surrounding wineries; there is no local bus network worth planning around. Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer days regularly pass 35 °C: do the walking before 11:00 and carry water.
- Rural roads at dusk and dawn carry kangaroos and livestock; avoid long drives at those hours.
- Some museums and the steam railway run on limited days or by booking only: check ahead.
- Mobile coverage thins quickly on the back roads towards Goondiwindi and Stanthorpe.
A quiet country town; the real risks are summer heat, wildlife on rural roads at dusk and long drives after a big day. Standard Australian precautions apply.
