Ward
Stop 20–40 min on SH1 for the Old Ward Garage Cafe and the Lake Grassmere salt stacks; sleep here only if you want the Ward Beach or Sawcut Gorge walks.
Ward is a small settlement on State Highway 1 in southern Marlborough, about 15 min north of Seddon and 40 min south of Blenheim. It is a road-trip pause rather than a destination: a cafe, a pub, a motel, salt works on the coast and a rough beach walk. Most travellers pass through between Picton and Kaikōura.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Kia ora or a handshake; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; overlong small talk before business
- Marae visit: Wait to be called on, follow your guide through the pōwhiri, remove shoes before the meeting house; avoid: Eating or drinking inside the wharenui; walking in front of speakers
- Tables and heads: Keep bottoms off tables and hats off tables; food stays away from heads; avoid: Sitting on tables or kitchen benches; touching people's heads
- Roads: Pull over at slow-vehicle bays to let queues pass; wave thanks; avoid: Stopping on the road for photos; drifting right after a stop
- Outdoors: Carry out all rubbish; use toilets; stick to tracks; avoid: Feeding kea and other birds; toileting outside
- Talk: Self-deprecating humour and understatement; avoid: Calling New Zealanders Australians; boasting
- Home visit: Bring wine or something to share; shoes off if the hosts do; avoid: Arriving empty-handed to a 'bring a plate' event
- Names: Use Māori place names and pronounce them with care; avoid: Joking about Māori words or haka
Scams and watch-outs
- Ward Beach is not a safe swimming beach in any weather; strong surf and currents.
- Keep at least 20 m from seals on the foreshore; they move fast on land and bite.
- The Marfells Beach–Cape Campbell route follows the coast: check the tide before setting out.
- One-lane bridges and passing lanes on SH1; keep left and watch for trucks (check).
- Fuel and food are limited: fill up in Blenheim, Seddon or Kaikōura (check).
Ward itself is a small roadside settlement; the real hazards are the sea and the road. Do not swim at Ward Beach, keep 20 m from seals, and drive SH1 with care — the district has one-lane bridges (check).
