Wangaratta
Stop one night if you are driving or training between Melbourne and Sydney; two nights only if you want the Murray to Mountains rail trail or a Warby-Ovens walk.
Wangaratta is a Hume Freeway and V/Line junction town of about 20,000 people in Victoria's High Country, roughly halfway between Melbourne and Albury-Wodonga. It is a practical break in a long drive, with a compact art deco centre, a rail trail start and the Warby-Ovens National Park 10 minutes out. Most travellers pass through; walkers and cyclists use it as a base.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer days can pass 35 °C; carry water on any walk in the Warby Ranges.
- Rural roads at dusk and dawn carry kangaroos and deer.
- The Hume Freeway is a divided highway: keep left unless overtaking.
- Fuel and food gaps widen north of Glenrowan and south of Benalla; fill up in town.
A quiet, safe country town; the real risks are summer heat, wildlife on rural roads at dusk and long driving days on the Hume.
