Walsrode
Go for one full day: the bird park fills it. Sleep in Soltau or Bad Fallingbostel and treat Walsrode as a half-day stop unless you have a car.
Walsrode is a small heath town of about 23,000 people between Hanover and Hamburg, known nationally for the Weltvogelpark, the world's largest bird park. The town centre itself is quiet: a convent, an open-air heath museum and a few parks. Most visitors come for the bird park and the surrounding Lüneburg Heath, and stay one night or pass through.

A quiet, low-crime small town; the real risks are unlit heath roads and trails after dark, ticks in long grass in summer, and sparse rural buses. 112 for fire and ambulance, 110 for police.
