Wakura Onsen
和倉温泉
Go only if you want a ryokan night with seafood and hot-spring baths: one night, two if you add Nanao or Notojima. The town itself is a two-hour walk.
Wakura Onsen is a 1,200-year-old hot-spring resort on the Noto Peninsula, built around one spring that feeds every inn. It is a bathing town, not a sightseeing town: the draw is a ryokan with dinner and an onsen, plus a short walk to the spring head and two free foot baths. Confirm current opening and rebuild status before booking, as the area was hit by the January 2024 Noto Peninsula earthquake.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: A small bow; a handshake if the other person offers; avoid: Hugs, back slaps, loud greetings
- Names: Family name plus -san; avoid: First names unless invited; adding -san to your own name
- Paying: Put money in the tray at the register; avoid: Tipping, or leaving loose cash for staff
- Trains: Queue at the floor marks, phone on silent, ask before reclining on the Shinkansen; avoid: Phone calls, eating on crowded commuter trains, blocking doors with bags
- Escalators: Stand on the side locals use — left in Tokyo, right in Osaka; stations now ask people to stand still on both; avoid: Stopping at the top or bottom
- Shoes: Off at the step-up entrance; toilet slippers only inside the toilet; avoid: Stepping on tatami in shoes or slippers
- Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity
- Gifts: Offer and receive with both hands; bring a small omiyage for hosts; avoid: Sets of four; cash outside an envelope
Scams and watch-outs
- The January 2024 Noto Peninsula earthquake damaged the area: confirm your ryokan, the baths and transport are open before you book.
- The JR station is about 3 km from the resort; without a ryokan pickup you need a bus or taxi.
- Ordinary JR trains stop at Nanao; the last leg is Noto Railway (¥180, roughly hourly) or a bus (¥350).
- Some Yūrakuchō alley bars are hostess bars with no posted prices: ask the total before you sit.
- Spring water reaches about 90°C at source: follow the bath rules and don't jump straight into the hottest pool.
A small resort town and generally safe. The real issues are the 2024 earthquake recovery, icy winter pavements, very hot spring water and alley bars with no posted prices.
