Wake Forest is a small town 24 miles north of Raleigh-Durham International Airport, known for a 1950s-frozen downtown and four historic districts, three on the National Register. The old Wake Forest University campus moved to Winston-Salem in the 1950s, which left the commercial core intact. Sights are walkable in the centre; everything else needs a car. Most travellers see it in a half-day and sleep here only if they want Falls Lake or cheaper rooms than Raleigh.

Get around
The compact downtown is walkable in 15–20 minutes end to end. For Falls Lake, the golf courses, shopping centres or Raleigh you need a car; there is no train, and the local bus network is limited. Rent at RDU.
