Wakayama is the prefectural capital, 1 h from Osaka by JR limited express and about 1 h 15 min by Nankai. The city's own draw is Wakayama Castle and the three old shrines; most travellers pass through on the way to Kōya-san, Shirahama or the Kumano coast. Give the city one night, or a day trip from Osaka.

Get around
Two rail stations (JR Wakayama and Nankai Wakayama-shi) and a city bus network. Buses between the stations pass the castle; the maximum city fare is about ¥220 and the ride is around 10 min. A one-day bus pass is ¥1,000. Bicycles can be rented near the castle and at the stations.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: A small bow; a handshake if the other person offers; avoid: Hugs, back slaps, loud greetings
- Names: Family name plus -san; avoid: First names unless invited; adding -san to your own name
- Paying: Put money in the tray at the register; avoid: Tipping, or leaving loose cash for staff
- Trains: Queue at the floor marks, phone on silent, ask before reclining on the Shinkansen; avoid: Phone calls, eating on crowded commuter trains, blocking doors with bags
- Escalators: Stand on the side locals use — left in Tokyo, right in Osaka; stations now ask people to stand still on both; avoid: Stopping at the top or bottom
- Shoes: Off at the step-up entrance; toilet slippers only inside the toilet; avoid: Stepping on tatami in shoes or slippers
- Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity
- Gifts: Offer and receive with both hands; bring a small omiyage for hosts; avoid: Sets of four; cash outside an envelope
Scams and watch-outs
- The city's own sights are modest: do not plan three days here unless you are using it as a base for Kōya-san or the coast.
- Some local tourist information is Japanese-only; carry a translation app.
- Summer is hot, humid and wet: July and August are the heaviest rain months.
- Check the castle keep and shrine opening hours before you go; some sites close earlier than the station area.
Wakayama is a quiet, low-crime city. The real risks are summer heat and humidity, uneven shrine paths, and late buses back from Wakanoura: check the last departure before you go out.
