Waipara
Stop for one night, not two: the wine cellars, the Weka Pass railway and the Glenmark church fill a half-day, and Kaikoura or Hanmer Springs is the next bed.
Waipara is a junction town of about 300 people on State Highway 1, an hour north of Christchurch, where the road to Hanmer Springs splits off. It is a wine district first — Pinot Noir and Riesling — and a small sight first: a 1906 stone church, a heritage railway over the Weka Pass, and a handful of cellar doors within a few minutes' drive. Most travellers see it as a lunch-and-tasting stop on the Christchurch–Kaikoura–Picton run, or as one night in a converted railway wagon before driving on.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Kia ora or a handshake; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; overlong small talk before business
- Marae visit: Wait to be called on, follow your guide through the pōwhiri, remove shoes before the meeting house; avoid: Eating or drinking inside the wharenui; walking in front of speakers
- Tables and heads: Keep bottoms off tables and hats off tables; food stays away from heads; avoid: Sitting on tables or kitchen benches; touching people's heads
- Roads: Pull over at slow-vehicle bays to let queues pass; wave thanks; avoid: Stopping on the road for photos; drifting right after a stop
- Outdoors: Carry out all rubbish; use toilets; stick to tracks; avoid: Feeding kea and other birds; toileting outside
- Talk: Self-deprecating humour and understatement; avoid: Calling New Zealanders Australians; boasting
- Home visit: Bring wine or something to share; shoes off if the hosts do; avoid: Arriving empty-handed to a 'bring a plate' event
- Names: Use Māori place names and pronounce them with care; avoid: Joking about Māori words or haka
Scams and watch-outs
- There is no staffed shop except the dairy at Waipara Gardens & Post Office, open weekday mornings only: buy food and fuel before you arrive.
- Cellar-door hours are short and seasonal, and some open by appointment only — check each winery before you drive out.
- Weka Pass Railway runs on the first and third Sunday of the month, every Sunday in January and most public holidays: a midweek visit gets you no train.
- State Highway 1 through Waipara carries trucks and passing traffic; take care pulling out of side roads and vineyard driveways.
- Cellar-door tastings mean drinking and driving on rural roads: use a spit bucket or book a driver.
Waipara is a quiet rural junction and personal safety is not the issue; the real risks are SH1 traffic, unlit back roads at night and drinking at tastings before driving.
