Wagga Wagga
Give Wagga one night if you are driving the Hume or Sturt highway; two nights only if you want the river walk, the gallery and a winery stop.
Wagga Wagga is the largest inland city in New South Wales, on the Murrumbidgee River, halfway between Sydney and Melbourne on the inland route. It is a working agricultural and university town rather than a resort: the draw is the river beach, the art gallery's glass collection, the botanic gardens and the food and wine of the Riverina around it. Most travellers pass through on a drive; a single night covers the centre on foot.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer days pass 35 °C: do the river walk and gardens before 10:00 or after 17:00.
- The Murrumbidgee can run fast after rain: swim at Wagga Beach only when locals are in and the water is calm.
- Long drives on the Hume and Sturt highways have few services between towns: fuel up in Wagga.
- Some airport hire cars are limited-mileage: confirm before you book.
Wagga is a safe country city; the real risks are summer heat, long highway drives with few services and fast river water after rain. Standard care at night around the pubs on Baylis and Fitzmaurice streets.
