Vredefort
Half a day for the crater viewpoint and information centre, or a full day if you take a guided tour of the dome. Not a base.
Vredefort is a small farming town of 3,000 people, best known for the Vredefort Dome — the largest and oldest visible meteor impact crater on Earth, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town itself has a handful of national monuments and a general store. Most visitors come for the geological site and leave the same day.
