The Volta Basin is Ghana's lake-and-mountain east: Lake Volta and its dammed arm, the highest mountain in the country, the tallest waterfall in West Africa and a monkey forest you can walk into. Almost everything sits within 1–2 hours of Ho or Hohoe, so one base covers it. Roads are calmer and towns cleaner than Accra or Kumasi, but distances are real: allow a full day per cluster and drive only in daylight.

Lake Volta is a working reservoir, not a swimming lake: currents, submerged trees and fishing nets. Use a life jacket and a local boatman.
Wli Falls and Afadzato trails are slippery after rain; the wet-season months are the greenest and the most hazardous.
Bilharzia (schistosomiasis) is a risk in slow fresh water; do not wade or swim in the lake or rivers.

Volta Basin (Ho, Hohoe, lake shore): The south of the basin follows the coastal pattern: main rains roughly April–July with a shorter wet spell around September–October. The far north of the basin is single-season: rains June–October, dry and dusty harmattan December–February. Falls run strongest June–October; hiking is best November–February.

The basin spans two rainfall patterns, so check the specific town: Hohoe and Ho are wetter earlier than the lake's northern shore.
