Vlychada
Βλυχάδα
Stay 1–2 nights if you want a quiet south-coast base with a marina and a black-sand beach; skip it if you want caldera views or nightlife.
Vlychada is a fishing village on Santorini's south coast, built around the island's largest marina and a black-sand beach under wind-carved cliffs. It has one minimarket, a handful of seafood tavernas and a tomato-factory museum, and it is markedly cheaper than Oia or Fira. Two nights covers the beach, the museum and a boat or horse trip; one night is enough if you are using it as a stop before Akrotiri or Perissa.

Get around
The village is small enough to walk: marina to beach is about 10–15 min on foot. There is no direct bus from Fira or Perissa — take the Fira–Perissa bus and get off at Emporio, then walk downhill about 2.5 km (1.6 mi) (30 min). Water taxis from Akrotiri and Perissa run irregularly, so treat them as unavailable unless confirmed locally. A car, scooter or e-bike is the practical way to reach Akrotiri, Perissa and Fira. The village is small enough to walk: marina to beach is about 10–15 min on foot. Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Say 'kaliméra' (morning) or 'kalispéra' (evening) on entering shops and tavernas; avoid: Launching straight into a question
- Hospitality: Accept offered coffee, sweets or raki; it is part of the welcome; avoid: Refusing flatly — take a little
- Churches: Covered shoulders and knees; quiet voices; a small candle donation; avoid: Turning your back on the altar for photos during a service
- Gestures: Wave with the palm turned towards yourself; avoid: The open palm pushed forward (moutza)
- Conversation: Family, food and football are easy topics; avoid: Lecturing on the debt crisis, Türkiye or the name of North Macedonia
- Dinner at a home: Bring pastries or wine; arrive a little late; avoid: Leaving food on the plate if you have been served more
- Dress: Casual; long trousers or skirt for monasteries; avoid: Swimwear in town, shops and churches
Scams and watch-outs
- No direct bus: the Emporio stop leaves a 2.5 km downhill walk, and the return is uphill.
- One minimarket only — no supermarket, pharmacy or ATM in the village; bring cash and supplies.
- Beach and taverna terraces are exposed to meltemi wind; bring a layer for evening outdoor seating.
- Water taxis to Akrotiri and Perissa are not reliably scheduled: check before relying on them.
- The beach has a nude and gay section at one end; keep walking if that is not your scene.
Vlychada is a low-crime village and the main risks are practical: wind and strong sun on an unshaded beach, uneven rocks at the cliffs, and no ATM or pharmacy in the village. Keep cash, use reef-safe sunblock, and do not swim alone at the far ends of the beach.
