Vitória

Vitória is the small island capital of Espírito Santo, about an hour by air from Rio or São Paulo, with a compact colonial centre, a bay full of mangroves and granite hills, and beaches along the eastern shore. Most travellers use it as a comfortable base for the coast and the mountain towns of the interior rather than as a destination in itself. Two nights covers the city; add nights if you want Guarapari, Domingos Martins or the coast south towards Bahia.

Get around
Buses cover the island but you cannot pay cash on board: you need the Cartão GV / Bilhete Único Metropolitano, sold at Terminal Jardim América and some pharmacies (a CPF helps). Taxis and ride-hailing are the easy option for short hops; fares are check. The Terceira Ponte links the island to Vila Velha.
