Vitória da Conquista
A half-day stop on the BR-116 between Minas Gerais and Feira de Santana: see the Cristo and the forest reserve, then move on. One night only if you need a bed on the road.
Vitória da Conquista is the largest city in Bahia's Central South, a commercial hub on the Rio–Bahia highway. Its sights – a hilltop crucifix, a forest reserve and a small park – fill a few hours. Most travellers pass through on the way to Lençóis, Brumado or Ilhéus.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake, hug or cheek kiss (one in São Paulo, two in Rio); avoid: Being stiff with new acquaintances
- Gestures: Use thumbs-up freely; avoid: The OK hand sign (it is rude)
- Language: Try Portuguese; say obrigado/obrigada; avoid: Defaulting to Spanish
- Time: Expect relaxed social punctuality; avoid: Being late for tours and flights
- Beach: Bring only a towel, cash and a copy of your ID; avoid: Leaving things unattended
Scams and watch-outs
- BR-116 is a busy truck route; avoid driving at night outside the city.
- The Cristo and the park are on the outskirts: arrange a taxi or car.
- Last bus departures to smaller towns are early afternoon; check the rodoviária schedule.
A typical Brazilian regional city: keep valuables out of sight, avoid empty streets at night and use ride-hailing rather than street taxis. The main risk is traffic on BR-116.
