Villaviciosa
Give Villaviciosa one night as a Camino del Norte stop or a cider-and-beach base; without a car, two nights is the limit.
Villaviciosa is a small Asturian town of about 6,600 people on the estuary of the Ría, 30 min from Gijón and 60 min from Oviedo by bus. The town itself is a half-day: a Romanesque church, a Holy Week museum, Indiano mansions and a dozen cider houses. The reason to stay longer is the coast and the pre-Romanesque churches inland, and both need wheels. Pilgrims on the Camino del Norte pass through, so beds are cheap and simple.

Get around
The town is compact and walkable in 15 min end to end; about half a dozen taxis cover it. Beaches and the outlying churches need a car, taxi or a long walk — bus service to Tazones and Rodiles is thin, so check times before relying on it.

- The estuary is muddy at low tide; the nearest swimmable beaches are 8–10 km out.
- Rural churches such as Santo Tomás de Coro are disused and normally locked.
Very safe. The real risks are wet, windy weather on the coast, unlit rural roads at night if you walk between villages, and cider that is stronger than it tastes.
